ok, well, im petitioning for the removal of the "away" mode from friendlist and make it obligitory to appear after 30 minuits without the character moving or sending a messege. Then when the character moves or sends a message it removes the AFK status.

I think this wld be good to prevent people just setting it too afk when they arnt.

if its not too hard and wont cause too much lag

While it automatically switching to it after 30 mins I agree with, people should still be able to set it themselves as well.

I don't do it, because then I'll forget to change it back. Should be like Trillian or AIM, where the message appears after about 20 minutes that you are away from the computer, and then gets removed once you get back on the computer and move your mouse.

I think there should be an option for it, allowing Auto-Away. If enabled, as soon as you're AFK for a certain time, or when you use another application, you will automatically become AFK. As soon as you're back, status should revert to whatever it was before.

As revert will set status to whatever you had before, manually setting Away will simply result in a permanent Away.

the 3 mins thing is good, but whats wrong with setting afk when you dont want ppl whisperin you?Its quite diffrent from do not disturb.

to the last two people, the point of this is so that OTHER PEOPLE KNOW YOU ARE AWAY.

Its disturbing seeing a guild member get pissed off at another guild member that's afk and it doesn't say away, because they think that person is being a dick that's ignoring the other person.

Also, let's say you're getting prepared for a GvG or a guild event of any kind, and you want to invite people in your guild, you instead of wasting time asking if that person wants to come and waiting for a response or until you figure out the are afk, just see that they are Afk.

This isn't for your benefit that you switch to afk if you are afk, it's for the other people's benefit (and yours if someone else goes afk)

A little extra note:
Why wont the /afk emote give Away status? Would be good if the /afk command have away status until the player moved again.

Who cares? If you try sending a person a message, and they don't reply in a timely fashion, then assume they are away. If the person really wanted to ignore you, I'm sure they'd take other steps.

I use a very simple method - send a message, and if I don't get a response w/in like 10 seconds, I move along.

Also, I think 30 mins is far too long to wait before applying any sort of AFK tag - 5 mins would be better. I think restricting your ability to send messages while in a state other than online is rather elitist; have the character taken out of certain states if there is activity (like remove the afk tag if they're actually playing)

Actually there is a /afk command which doesn't set/unset your afk status, but it makes you /sit.
O.o some one has to explain that to me.

Point is:
/signed for more ways go go afk
/not signed for being unable to go AFK yourself

Why in heavens would I want my guild to keep asking me to hurry up for AB, for 30 minutes, while I have already left my keyboard.
It should be normally settable through /afk and the friends menu.

AO actually has the timer set on 5 minutes, which is too short as it tends to put you afk while you are just watching the chat.
But 15 minutes should be feasible enough.

Auto-Away is a must ;-)
Reading forums, checking wiki etc.. game should automatically set away until GW got focus again.

Not moving mouse/keyboard for 3 minutes should result in the same, setting Away until you're back.

stalker! :P joking, i want to be away all the time without having to deal with the many answers sometime that is unending... so the away is sort of like a polite way of saying do not disturb for me, because sometime when you are on do not disturb, people still disturb you! its annoying.
